How to Draw an American Railroad

How to Draw an American Railroad thumbnail
Drawings of a railroad use perspective for depth.

Drawings of American railroads look much like drawings of railroads from other nations and regions of the world. The regular pattern of this travel staple incorporates the same basic components in many locations. The rhythmic, evenly spaced railroad ties and the long, stretching rails identify the railroad in many countries. To draw an American railroad, use flat stretches of plains to suggest the landscape of the heartland. Drawing a railroad requires the use of perspective to suggest depth.

Instructions

    • 1

Using your ruler as a straight edge, draw a long horizontal line across your page. This line represents the horizon.

    • 2

Make a point in the center of the horizontal line.

    • 3

Draw a long crescent shape from the center point. Extend this line to the bottom left corner of the page. Make the curve of this line more rounded as it exits the center point. Straighten the line slightly as it nears the bottom of the page.

    • 4

Draw a second line from the center point. This line should look like a backward "C" shape. Make this crescent terminate at the bottom center of the page. This completes the outline of the railroad. It should look narrow at the horizon and wide at the bottom of the page.

    • 5

Draw the railroad ties by making long rectangles over the outline for the track. Make the ties extend slightly over the boundaries of the two lines. Draw the ties smaller and closer together near the horizon. Make the railroad ties larger and spaced farther apart as they near the bottom of the page.

    • 6

Draw a line that parallels the first crescent shape. Draw this line close beside the first crescent shape to create the rail. Repeat this step on the second crescent shape.

    • 7

Erase the lines of the ties inside of each rail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Erase inside of the rails carefully so that you do not erase the lines for the rails.
