Slow Boot-Up on a Gateway Laptop
Several things can can cause a slow bootup in a Gateway laptop, including a virus,corrupt registry files, incorrectly placed registry files or user profile settings. The speed with which the Gateway works after bootup also influences the initiation speed. If the Gateway is older and has less than 1GB of RAM memory, consider adding more RAM as well as checking the disk, fixing the registry files and running an antivirus scan.

Navigate to the "Start" menu. Select "Accessories" and choose the "System Tools" option. Select "System Information" from the list of drop-down options. Wait for the window to appear to give you all of the system information. Read the amount of RAM that is in your Gateway computer. If this amount is less than 1 GB, contact a professional computer technician to add more RAM memory.

Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "Computer." Right-click your primary drive, which should be "C:," and select "Properties." Choose the "Tools" tab. Wait for her the new window to appear. Under the "Error-checking" category check to make sure the "Automatically fix file system errors" box is check-marked. Press the "Check Now" button. Wait for the the disk to be checked and any disk errors fixed. This will help speed up the computer.

Download and install a registry cleaner such as Ccleaner, PC Health Advisor or Registry Mechanic (see Resources). Open the registry cleaner and click the "Scan" or "Start Scan" button. Note that the button title might differ slightly depending on the program use. Wait for the registry cleaner to finish and close the program. Note that on some programs you might need to click the "Clean" button.

Open your antivirus program and click the update option. Scan the computer for any virus by clicking the appropriate scan computer option.

Change your user profile settings, which might also cause slow startups. Go to "Start" and right-click on the "Computer" option. Choose "Manage" from the drop-down menu. Click on the "Local users and groups" link and right-click on "Users." Choose the "New user" option. Fill in the new user information and type "Administrators." Click on the "OK" button to finish.
