How to Test a Receptacle with a Multimeter
Before beginning any repairs on an AC outlet or receptacle, always turn the circuit breaker that powers the outlet to the "off" position. As an extra safety measure, test the outlet before removing the cover. Testing ensures that you can work safely around the outlet. You can test the outlet by plugging a portable lamp into the socket. If you do not have a small lamp, use your digital multimeter to test the outlet. Does this Spark an idea?

2
Place the red, or positive, probe in the smaller of the two slots. Place the black probe in the larger slot. Inserting the probes into these slots will measure the voltage between the hot wire and the neutral wire. The voltage should be approximately 120 volts AC.
