How to Make a Diorama of Space
A diorama depicting space is one of the simplest dioramas for students to create. A diorama is a three-dimensional diagram illustrating a concept, such as animal habitats or galaxies. Many students choose to use a shoebox for a diorama base. The images inside the diorama are created with many different materials, including tape or Styrofoam. Older students will create more complicated projects; however, younger students are wise to stick to simpler shoebox-based dioramas.

1
Remove the lid from the shoebox and paint the inside of the shoebox with black paint. The shoebox will lay on its side, so make the paint even throughout the box. Allow the paint to dry.
-
2
Paint the Styrofoam balls to resemble planets while the shoebox is drying. Use blue and green for Earth, red for Mars, and mixes of yellows and browns for other planets. Place the planets on wax paper to allow them to dry.

3
Push the push pin through various points in the shoe box when it is dry. This action will create holes which represent stars. Make the holes large enough that light can be seen inside the box.
-
4
Tie the fishing line around the planets when the planets finish drying. Attach the end of the fishing line to the shoebox with the tape. Place the shoebox on its side and attach the planets to the side in the air so the planets hang down from the diorama's ceiling.
