How to Get Your Novel Onto Kindle

If you are frustrated with traditional publishers and want to quickly get your novel into the hands of readers, publish your novel on the Amazon Kindle platform. Besides Kindle eBook readers, your Kindle novel can be read on tablets, smartphones and most computers using Amazon's free Kindle App. List your novel for free to gain an audience or sell your novel and keep up to 70 percent of the sell price in royalties.

Instructions

    • 1

Build your book from a Word document into a Kindle format by saving your book file in DOC format. Make sure to enter a page break at the end of every chapter, convert all images to .jpeg format, and delete any special fonts and bulleted lists that will not translate into the Kindle format.

    • 2

Spell and grammar check your book one last time. Don't just rely on Word. Remember to manually proofread your document multiple times. Typos and grammar errors can turn off potential audiences for your book.

    • 3

Create the Title Page and other front matter, such as a copyright page or preface in Word. Center the title and your name as the first page of your document, then insert a page break. Add additional front pages with a page break after each section.

    • 4

Scroll to the end of your book and add back matter, such as your biography or author notes. Make sure to insert a page break after every section.

    • 5

Save your Word document as a HTML document.

    • 6

Convert your book from an HTML document to an eBook format using MobiPocket Creator. If you don't have MobiPocket Creator, download it at mobipocket.com.

    • 7

      Open MobiPocket Creator.

    • 8

Click on "Import from an Existing File" icon, select your saved novel in HTML format, then click "Import."

MobiPocket Creator imports your novel and opens it for final editing.

    • 9

Add a cover image in .jpeg format and click "Update" to save the cover.

    • 10

Finalize your book by clicking "Build" from the Build menu.

MobiPocket Creator converts the book to a PRC format. This is the final format for the Kindle book.

    • 11

Navigate to the Kindle Direct Publishing website at kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin and log in using your Amazon account information.

If you don't have an Amazon account, you can create one on this page.

Amazon opens your Direct Publishing Bookshelf.

    • 12

Click on the "Add a New Title" button on the bottom-left of the screen.

    • 13

Enter product details for your novel. These details include title, author, book description and keywords used or searching for your book on Amazon.com.

    • 14

Enable Digital Rights Management for your book by clicking the "Enable Digital Rights Management" radio button.

    • 15

Upload your book by selecting the .prc file and clicking "Upload." While the file is uploading, you'll be prompted to verify your publishing rights.

Amazon uploads the file to their system.

    • 16

Click the "Preview' button to view how your novel will appear in the Kindle app.

If you don't like what you see, click the "Download HTML" button to download the final file to your computer. Use MobiPocket Creator to edit the document, then follow Steps 11 to 15 to reload the document.

    • 17

Enter a royalty option, then specify the list price for your book in dollars, British pounds and euros. The amount of royalties you choose will affect how much you can charge for your book. View the List Price Requirements page on your account page to see Amazon's up-to-date price requirements for your novel.

    • 18

      Click "Save and Publish."

Amazon will list your book for sale in the Kindle store in approximately 24 hours. Additional information, such as a Book Details page, will be updated on Amazon.com within 48 to 72 hours.
