How to Create a Fermata With Ableton Live
You can use the automation feature within Ableton Live for creating fermatas. A fermata is a sustained note during a pause of a musical measure. Ableton Live's automation feature allows you to input fermatas and other musical notation within the arrangement screen by manually drawing them into place. By increasing the level of "Release" in the track's automation lane during a pause, the note will be sustained and will have a holding effect. A fermata can be created in Ableton Live in less than five minutes.

1
Launch Ableton Live. Click "Start," type "Ableton" into the search field, then select "Live" from the list of search results that appear on your screen.
-
2
Open the project you wish to add a fermata to. Click "File," "Open Project," and select it from the list that appears on the pop-up screen.

3
Go to the "Arrangement" screen by clicking the icon with three horizontal bars in the top-right corner of the user interface screen. Select the MIDI track containing the instrument you want to add the fermata effect to by clicking the track's name on the right side of the screen. You can add this effect to any of the native MIDI instruments, such as Simpler, Sampler, Tension and Operator. You can also add it to third-party instruments, as long as they have a "Release" parameter.
-
4
Navigate down to the bottom of the screen and click on the MIDI instrument's "Release" Knob. The automation lane for Release will now be selected in the box directly under the track's name.
-
5
Click your mouse on the instrument track display's measure containing the pause you want to add the fermata to, then click the pencil icon at the top of the screen. This activates the "Draw Mode Switch," which allows you to input the Release automation information.
-
6
Increase the instrument's "Release" level by clicking the paused measure once again with your mouse. The Release's red automation line will be raised for that measure only, creating the sustained fermata effect during the pause. The "Release" level being increased will make the instrument hold the note for a longer period of time before silencing it.
