How to Change Old Can Lighting to New

Save

Like any other type of lighting, recessed can lighting needs to be replaced with time. The style or function of the can lighting can be easily updated with new can lights. The nice thing about replacing the can lighting is that all of the wiring should already be in place for the new lights. The project can be accomplished in a weekend with a few tools. Homeowners who are simply looking for a new look for their can lights can replace the trim with inexpensive trim pieces.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Pry bar
  • Wire nuts
  • Light bulbs
  • Turn off the circuit breaker to the room where the old can lighting is located.

  • Remove the light bulb and trim from the old can lighting. The trim should easily pop out of place with a screwdriver.

  • Disconnect the can lighting from the electrical cable in the ceiling. Untwist the wire nuts from the ends of the wires.

  • Remove the can lighting from the ceiling. Unscrew or pry the can lighting from the ceiling joists with a screwdriver or pry bar. Take down the lights.

  • Install the new can light in place per manufacturer directions. Connect the wiring of the can light to the cable in the ceiling. Match the colors of the wires and twist together the ends. Screw a wire nut over the top of the wire ends.

  • Pop the trim into place on the can light. Screw a light bulb in place on the can lighting.
