Creating a dress from recycled materials can make both a fashion statement as well as an environmental statement. Using recycled materials can showcase the many ways that humanity is often wasteful as well as symbolize how many items that are thrown away can serve many other purposes. Creating a dress from nontraditional and recycled dress making materials will also highlight your skills and ingenuity as a designer and your creative fashion sense.

Things You'll Need

  • Trash bag
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Newspaper
  • Safety pins

Cut a hole in the bottom of a trash bag large enough to fit your head through. Cut holes in the sides to poke your arms through.

Place the dress over your head and view the dress in the mirror as you carefully trim away sections from the skirt length, neckline and shoulders to create the skirt length, neckline and sleeves you desire. The dress will be sleeveless, however, you can modify the thickness of the straps through trimming.

Gather safety pins from around your house and pinch the section of bag at the center of the neckline between your thumb and index finger to create a sweetheart neckline dip. Secure the material in the sweetheart with a safety pin.

Gather any excess bag material around your waist and pinch it in the back at your waistline. Have an assistant pin the gathered material to give the dress a defined waist.

Collect the packing tape or duct tape off of old packing boxes and gather old newspapers.

Crumple and cut the newspapers to create texture and size you desire.

Using the collected tape, adhere the newspaper to the shirt of the dress.
