How to Send a Smile on Facebook

Smileys are universally employed on the Internet to show one's feelings. On Facebook, you can use smileys or emoticons in chat, email and wall posts. When you type the characters that represent a smiley in Facebook email or chat, it is converted to a picture of a smiling face. Smileys are useful when you want to show your mood to the other person.

Instructions

Email / Messages

1. Click "Messages" on the left of the main Facebook page while you are logged in.

2. Click "New Message" above the messages list.

3. Enter the name of a Facebook friend in "To." If you want to send a message to somebody who is not on Facebook, type the recipient's email address instead.

4. Type a smiley in "Message." Use the characters :-) or :) to make a smiling face.

5. Click "Send."

Chat

1. Click the Facebook chat bar while you are logged in to your account.

2. Make sure you are online and not invisible on Facebook chat. If the chat bar on the bottom right says "Chat (offline)" you are in "invisible" mode. Click the chat bar to go online so your friends who are also online can see you.

3. Click the name of a friend who appears online on Facebook chat.

4. Type an emoticon such as :-) for a smile. Hit the "Enter" key to start chatting.
