Instructions

    • 1

Build hills of dirt spaced 6 feet apart, and allow 7 to 10 feet between rows. Build the hills at least 6 to 12 inches high.

    • 2

Plant watermelon seeds into the hill at a 1-inch depth once the soil has reached 68 to 95 degrees F.

    • 3

Work 10 lbs. of 10-10-10 fertilizer into the 5- to 6-foot area around the plant with a hoe.

    • 4

Pick a male flower from the plant and brush it against female flower to promote fruit growth. Female flowers do not usually appear until seven flowers have sprouted. Add more fertilizer, about 32 percent nitrogen, at this time.

    • 5

Spread a 1-inch layer of mulch onto the hill once fruit starts to appear, to protect the belly.

    • 6

Water the plant once a week, allowing the soil to dry partially between waterings.

    • 7

Harvest the plant once the ground spot has changed from pale green or white to yellow.
