How to Tie a Standard Tie
The tie (or necktie) is a piece of cloth which is worn for decorative purposes around the neck. Resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat, men and boys wear ties as part of regular office attire or formal wear; they can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military). Women and girls can also wear ties for fashion or uniform.
Tying a tie is relatively easy for most people, however it may take a little practice to tie a neat knot. Children may also need some assistance.

The Duke of Windsor popularized the Windsor knot, which forms a triangle. Put the tie around your neck, with the narrow end on the left and the wide end of the tie on your right. The point of the wide end should rest approximately 12 inches lower than the point of the narrow end.
-
2
Cross the wide end of the tie over the narrow end to create an X. Bring the wide end under and up through the loop between the collar and your tie, then bring the wide end back down so it overlaps the narrow end.

Watching yourself in the mirror can help you knot your tie properly. Pull the wide end underneath the narrow end and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end is inside out. Turn the wide end across the front from right to left.
-
4
Pull the wide end up through the loop again. Bring the wide end down through the knot in front.
-
5
Practice makes perfect. Tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar using both hands.

A necktie is tied to the proper length when the tip of the tie lies directly in line with the bottom of your belt buckle.
