  1. Installation Troubleshooting

    • 1

Load the HP Photosmart software disk into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

    • 2

Wait for installation to begin. If nothing happens, click "Start" and select "Computer." Double-click the icon for the HP installation disk under the CD-ROM driver and select "Install."

    • 3

      Follow the installation prompts.

    • 4

Connect the printer with a USB cable to an available USB port on the computer when you receive a prompt to connect it. If you connect the printer before this prompt, this will cause the printer to malfunction.

    • 5

Disconnect the printer if you plugged the printer in before the prompt. Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click on "Uninstall a program" under "Programs." Click to highlight the HP Photosmart software and select "Uninstall." Restart your computer once the uninstall process is complete. Repeat the installation process for the software and connect the printer at the proper point in the procedure.

    Basic Troubleshooting

    • 6

Examine the USB printer cable to ensure that you have it securely installed on both ends.

    • 7

Examine the power cable to ensure that you have it securely fastened to the printer. If you have the printer connected to a surge protector, make sure you have the surge protector connected to an electrical outlet and have the power switched on. If power is still not getting to the printer, plug it in to another power source. You may need to replace the surge protector.

    • 8

Remove the protective film from the bottom of the ink cartridges before installing them in the printer.

    • 9

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click on "Hardware and Sound" and select "Devices and Printers." Ensure that you have the HP Deskjet F4100 selected as the default printer. Your default printer icon will display with a check mark. Right-click the icon for the HP Deskjet F4100 and select "Set As Default Printer" if the printer does not display as default.

    Paper Jams

    • 10

Keep the printer turned on and turn it around so the back is facing you.

    • 11

Press the tab on the left-hand side of the rear panel door.

    • 12

Pull the door towards you to remove it.

    • 13

Pull any paper gently out from under the rollers. If the paper tears as you pull it, remove all of the pieces, as these can cause the printer to jam again.

    • 14

Insert the right-hand tab of the rear door and push the left-hand side until you hear a click. Turn the printer to the front, re-load the paper tray and press the "Resume" button.

    Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting

    • 15

Examine the ink cartridges to ensure that you have removed the protective film and that you have them installed in the appropriate location on the carriage. Refer to the diagram on the carriage for proper placement.

    • 16

Open the HP Solution Center in the Photosmart software. Click on "Settings" and select "Printer Toolbox."

    • 17

Click the "Estimated Ink Levels" tab and two images will appear showing the amount of ink remaining in both the color and black cartridges. Install replacement ink cartridges, if necessary.

    • 18

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel" if you use a brand of ink cartridge other than HP. The Photosmart software cannot detect ink levels on brands other than HP ink cartridges. Click on "Hardware and Sound" and select "Devices and Printers. Right-click on the HP Deskjet F4100 and select "Properties." Select the "Color Management" tab and click "Estimate Ink Levels."

    • 19

Clean the ink cartridges if ink levels are good but the print job does not complete or appears smudged. Open the HP Solution Center and select "Printer Toolbox." Click on "Clean the Print Cartridge(s)" and click on "Clean" in the window that opens. Click "Done" in the next window that opens if you are satisfied with the quality of the print. Follow prompts if you are still not satisfied.

    • 20

Clean the ink cartridges manually if you are still not satisfied with the quality of the printing. Open the print cartridge door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Unplug the printer. Press down lightly on the print cartridge and pull it towards you and out of the slot. Dip a dry swab that is lint-free and will not come apart or leave fibers in distilled water and squeeze the excess water from it. Hold each cartridge by its sides and clean only the copper-colored contacts, using small circular motions. Allow the cartridges to dry for at least 10 minutes before reinstalling.
