How to Get an NPN Number

As part of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) maintains a producer database (PDB) that holds license information for all agents and agencies in the nation. The purpose of the PDB is to prevent illegal or unethical practices from appearing in the industry. State insurance departments supply all of the data for the PDB, but only the NIPR has your NPN, or National Producer Number. The NPN is a 10-digit number.

Go to the NPN search page on the NIPR website (see Resources).

Enter in the Social Security number and last name for an individual. Click “submit query” to view the NPN result.

Type in the license number and state to get the NPN by license number. Click “submit query” to view the NPN query result.

Input the FEIN, or federal employer identification number, to search for the NPN by agency. Click “submit query” to view the result.
