How to Make a Triangle

Make a Triangle

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2-inch thick steel rod 12 to 30 inches long
  • Metal shaping tools
  • Length of cord or hooked metal stand
  • Metal beater

The triangle is a percussion instrument that has been found in orchestras only since the end of the 18th century, although it was used in Europe much earlier. It has a clear, shimmering tone that varies according to the size of the triangle and the strength with which someone strikes it. Read on to learn more.

Measure a third of the rod's length from one edge and mark it. Make another mark another third of the way down the rod.

Bend the rod at a 60-degree angle at each of the marks to form an equilateral triangle. Bring the ends almost together at the third vertex, but do not let them actually touch.

Attach a cord to the triangle at one of the bends in the metal.

Suspend the triangle by the cord from your hand or attach it to a metal stand.

Strike the triangle, using a metal beater, on the edge between the bends in the metal. You may also strike the triangle in the center of each side repeatedly, tracing out a triangle pattern as you do so, but this is only when using a large triangle as a fire alarm or to call people to dinner.
