How to Draw an Australian Sea Lion
An Australian sea lion is a water-loving animal that features a doglike face with a streamlined body and fins to guide it through the water quickly. Drawing one of these animals does not have to be a difficult task, no matter what your skill level or experience may be. While a picture of an Australian sea lion will surely assist you in recreating this image, patience will help you through each section of the animal's features.

1
Sketch a medium-sized oval on your page to begin drawing the Australian sea lion. These animals feature elongated snouts similar to a domesticated dog. Check the basic shape of the sea lion in the picture you are using as a reference guide for any assistance on creating this oval.
-
2
Draw a larger oval just below the head of the sea lion to define a basic shape to this animal's body. Use light pencil strokes until you are confident in the proportions of this body with the head. Depending on the position of the model you are using to create this image, you may want to add a bit of curve to the oval's shape. Sketch the rear end of the sea lion so that it meets at a point.
-
-
3
Sketch the front fins of the Australian sea lion by drawing curved lines that meet at a point. The fins of this particular animal are oval in shape, but the front and rear lines contour in the same direction and meet at a single point. There are two front fins of this particular oceanic animal.
-
4
Draw two small ovallike shapes that extend past the pointed rear end of this animal to provide a basic outline to the rear fins. Check the picture you are using as a guide to assist you in designing these features as proportionally accurate to the rest of the body as you possibly can. Add small lines in each of the front and rear fins of the sea lion to create a textured appearance to these features.
-
5
Move to the head to add detail to the Australian sea lion's facial structuring. Draw a small triangle in the middle of the face to represent the nose of this animal. The triangle should be placed upside down, as it is featured in the reference guide. You may choose to move the nose off-center to the right or left, depending on the angle of the sea lion's face.
-
6
Sketch out two small circles proportionally positioned at equal distances above the nose you have just drawn. These two small circles are the eyes of the sea lion. Make two tiny trianglelike marks next to each of the eyes to create the ears of this animal.
-
7
Draw a W-shaped line underneath the nose of the sea lion, with the middle part connecting to the nose. This feature will represent the upper part of the animal's mouth, similar to a dog or cat. Add horizontal strokes to this area to reflect the whiskers.
-
8
Check the rough draft of your Australian sea lion with the reference guide and fix any differences you find between the two. Erase any guidelines you used to sketch out the basic shapes of the animal, and create more contoured lines that mimic the actual appearance of the sea lion.
-
9
Trace over the sea lion's pencil lines with an ink pen. Carefully move over all of the intended detailed lines so you do not smear any ink or make any harsh mistakes. Let the ink dry, then properly erase any remaining pencil marks from the page.
