How to Load the Film in a Nikon FE

How to Load the Film in a Nikon FE thumbnail
The Nikon FE camera takes quality film photos.

First released in 1978, the Nikon FE is a 35 mm film camera, and its film is loaded in a similar way to most other film cameras. It was one of the first to use batteries rather than being completely manual. It is a single-lens reflex, or SLR, camera that is compatible with nearly all Nikon lenses. Loading the film is relatively easy, but take care never to touch the inside of the camera; only touch the film take-up spool to reduce the chance of damaging the shutter blades.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the back of the camera. Locate the small, silver safety lock ring on the film-rewind knob. Slide it to the right. Lift the black rewind knob until the back pops open.

    • 2

Place the film cassette into the slot on the left side of the camera opening, with the film leader facing right. Let go of the rewind knob to lock the cassette in place.

    • 3

Pull the film leader to the right gently, taking care not to touch the inside of the camera. Feed the leader into any slot in the film take-up spool, located in the right side of the camera. Make sure the sprockets to the left of the take-up spool fill the film's perforations -- this is what will advance the film.

    • 4

Rotate the take-up spool to the left, back toward the film cassette, to make sure it is wound firmly.

    • 5

Close the back cover and press gently until it clicks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although the Nikon FE only shows 36 exposures in its counter, you can take more photos if your roll allows. The counter will stop at 36, so you must manually count your photos after that.
