How to Make a Chiffon Tutu

How to Make a Chiffon Tutu thumbnail
Make a floaty tutu from chiffon fabric.

Chiffon is a lightweight, flowing fabric that is ideal for floating garments like a tutu. The fabric is droopy, however, and will not create a stiff skirt like a tulle tutu. A chiffon tutu is ideal for slow dances and spins, because the fabric will spin away from the body and drift gently down as if defying gravity. Other than the choice of fabric, the process of making a chiffon tutu is the same as making any other fabric tutu.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1-inch-wide elastic
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • 10 yards chiffon fabric
  • Embellishments
  • Hot glue and glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the waist of the person who will wear the tutu. Cut a piece of elastic 3 inches shorter than this measurement.

    • 2

Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1/2 inch and sew in place to make a circle.

    • 3

Cut the chiffon into strips that are 6 inches wide and about 40 inches long.

    • 4

Make stacks of three or four strips of chiffon fabric.

    • 5

Pick up the strips one at a time and fold in half. Place a folded strip over the elastic waistband and pull the long ends of the chiffon fabric through the hole in the loop, effectively knotting the fabric over the elastic waist. Adjust the knot so it hangs below the elastic.

    • 6

Repeat this process for all the other strips, completely covering the elastic in fabric knots.

    • 7

Add ribbons, bows or other embellishments to the waistband or skirt to make it fancier, if you desire. Attach the embellishments with hot glue.
