How to Find a Wine Expert thumbnail
A sommelier's job is to know all about grapes and wine.

When you need the perfect bottle of wine to go with a special meal, seek the help of a sommelier, or wine expert. Becoming a sommelier does not require a particular degree, and restaurants can call their wine experts sommeliers without needing any particular certification. However, wine enthusiasts who wish to procure positions at high-end restaurants tend to have years of experience working with wines, or have taken a course offered by institutions such as The Sommelier Society of America or The Court of Master Sommeliers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Contact a local, national or international professional organization dedicated to training wine experts. The Court of Master Sommeliers, for example, maintains a membership listing, including contact information, of more than 100 professionals who have earned the society's master diploma. You can post a job opening with these organizations.

Visit the high-end restaurants in your area. Ask a manager or ownership for wine expert recommendations, or ask to speak to the sommelier on staff to inquire about special projects or sommelier networking. If available in your area, you may also want to look for wine bars, which specialize in knowing about wines, wine production and wine pairings.

Visit regional wineries. A number of regions in North America produce wine, including the Napa and Sonoma counties of California, the Columbia River area of Washington, and the Hudson Valley region of New York. Talk wine with your local producers and ask for referrals for sommeliers in the area.

Place an ad in your local classifieds. Indicate why you are looking for a wine expert, as well as any credentials you'd like to see from respondents. Certificates from sommelier courses, or extensive restaurant experience at businesses that pride themselves on their wine list are good indications of a knowledgeable respondent.
