How to Repair My Lace Front Wig

How to Repair My Lace Front Wig thumbnail
A good lace-front wig looks just like real hair.

In a lace-front wig, the bulk of the wig consists of rows of hair sewn onto a foundation made of netting. This netting stops a few inches before the hairline, and a piece of lace is sewn in place. Individual hairs are knotted into the lace, creating a very natural hairline. Over time, this lace can tear loose from the netting, causing the front to separate from the rest of the wig. When this happens, it is important to repair the front to preserve the wig. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pin the wig to a canvas or styrofoam head form using large ball pins.

    • 2

Use a pick comb to brush a part in the wig, following the separation between the lace and netting. Clip the hair on both sides with alligator clips, to keep it out of your way.

    • 3

Thread a curved needle with monofilament, a clear plastic thread available in most fabric stores.

    • 4

Carefully sew the lace back onto the netting with a simple overhand stitch, creating a series of small loops that joins the two materials back together.

    • 5

Tie off the monofilament when you complete the repair.

    • 6

Sew a second row of overhand stitches on top of the first for added strength.

    • 7

Remove the clips and brush the hair back in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot find monofilament, fine fishing line can be substituted.

  • Keep your stitches, as well as the bunching of lace and netting they create, as small as possible to avoid creating a noticeable bump.
