How to Prepare Fabric for Meshwork Weaving

Meshwork weaving is consists of artistically interwoven strips of brightly colored bias tape. The bias tape is held together by a glue that is melted during the final step of ironing of the meshwork. Make your own meshwork weaving by preparing the base fabric with guide lines. Once the fabric is prepared, it is ready for you to start pinning the vertical strips to it. The remaining bias strips are woven vertically through the vertical strips to make the mesh pattern.

  • 1/2-inch double folded fusible bias tape strips
  • Base fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the base fabric with shears to the size that you are going to use to weave the meshwork into.

    • 2

Cut the 1/2-inch fusible bias tape into strips that are 1-inch wide and the length of your fabric, from top to bottom. Cut as many strips as you will need to cover the fabric twice, once with vertical strips and once with horizontal strips.

    • 3

Place the base fabric on your ironing board. Draw a series of four evenly spaced vertical lines across the fabric with the straight edged ruler and the fabric marker.

    • 4

Draw four evenly spaced horizontal lines across the fabric with the straight edged ruler and the fabric marker so that they intersect at 90-degree angles with the vertical lines.

    • 5

The fabric is now ready to have the meshwork strips attached to it. First pin the fabric mesh strips vertically, using the guidelines to ensure that you have made them straight. Pin the fabric 3/4-inch over the finished edge lines of the fabric. Weave the horizontal fabric strips through the vertical strips to make the meshwork. When you are done weaving, press the bias strips with a hot iron to melt the glue and fuse them together.
