How to Use Vellum Paper for Illustrations

Use ink to create your vellum illustrations.

Vellum is a type of specialty paper known for its sheer nature. The paper commonly is used in craft projects, but also is usable in drawing. Unlike traditional drawing paper, though, light shines through, creating a distinctive look when ink is applied. As smudging becomes a potential issue, it's best to avoid pencil illustrations if you don't plan to frame the drawing. Instead, opt for pen or marker.

Instructions

1. Use a piece of scrap vellum paper to experiment and practice with. This allows you to get a feel for drawing on this distinctive paper. Try out different ink pens or marker types to find one that works the best for the look you wish to achieve with your illustrations.

2. Create an initial sketch of your illustrations on separate pieces of paper. Correcting mistakes on vellum paper is very difficult, so proper planning beforehand can prevent potential mishaps.

3. Transfer the illustrations onto the vellum paper. You either can trace them, since vellum is translucent, or duplicate them in a freehand style.

Tips & Warnings

• According to the Scrapjazz website, vellum paper isn't as porous as other forms of paper, so the ink does not absorb as easily. Be sure to allow adequate drying time of at least 24 hours so the ink on your illustrations has time to absorb and dry.

• If you plan to attach the vellum illustrations to another type of paper, be sure to use adhesive formulated especially for the paper. Otherwise it may show through.
