How to Apply for Unemployment Extensions in Missouri

Save

When you are awarded unemployment benefits in Missouri, those benefits are available for up to 26 weeks. If you find yourself still unemployed when you reach the end of your awarded compensation, you may be eligible for extended unemployment benefits. Through the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, the United States Department of Labor has made the extended benefits available through Jan. 3, 2012. Known as Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC), the extended benefits have four separate tiers of extended unemployment compensation.

Submit claim forms for all of your initial benefits. You must completely use up all of your awarded unemployment benefits on your initial Missouri claim before you qualify for extended benefits.

Check your mailbox regularly once you have filed your last claim form on your initial awarded benefits. After exhausting initial benefits, the Missouri Department of Labor evaluates your claim and mails out a letter informing you of your eligibility for extended benefits. You cannot apply for the extension of benefits until you receive this letter.

Call the Missouri regional claims center for your area of the state to apply for your extended benefits once you receive your letter. Missouri does not allow online filing for extended benefits. The Missouri Department of Labor website has a listing of all the regional claims centers and their phone numbers (see Resource).

Tips & Warnings

  • When you apply for extended benefits, you will be asked questions similar to those from your initial claim. You must confirm your last employment details and give information on what you have been doing to find a new job. Like the initial claim, a determination letter will be mailed to you within 10 days to let you know the status of your application.
