How to Make a Transparent Dock in Snow Leopard

With Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard, Apple adjusted the appearance of the Dock to include a translucent 3D "glass" shelf. The application icons now appear to sit on the Dock's shelf and the shelf reflects the image of the open windows. If you wish to make the dock completely transparent, you can move the Dock to the left or right sides of your desktop which eliminates the translucent shelf effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Apple menu, select "System Preferences."

    • 2

Click "Dock," which is listed within the "Personal" group.

    • 3

Adjust the Dock to your liking. Setting the Dock to the left or right side of your desktop, rather than the bottom, will remove the 3D glass shelf. This makes the Dock completely transparent, rather than translucent. Moving the "Size" and Magnification" sliders further towards their "Max" setting will make the transparency of the Dock more obvious. You can optionally have the Dock automatically hide out of view when not in use.
