Mud stains are a common problem, especially with kids running around, but a stain doesn't need to be permanent. Whether on clothing, carpeting or furniture, you can remove mud stains using only a few household materials. There is no need to buy expensive commercial cleaners that may not even do the trick.   • Potato
  • Butter knife
  • Borax

      Let the mud-stained area dry and scrape off the residue using a butter knife.

      Cut a potato in half and scrub the area of the stain, getting as much juice out of the potato and onto the area of the stain as possible. Let the potato and juice sit on the stain for 20 minutes, then launder as usual. If the stain persists, see the next step.

      Mix a solution of borax to baking soda with a four to one ratio, and mix in a bucket of water. In a 5 gallon bucket, mix 4 cups borax with 1 cup baking soda, then fill with water.

      Soak the clothing or stained article in the bucket's solution for a few hours and launder as usual.

  • If the stain is on a carpet, use the same techniques, only scrub with water rather than laundering.
