Crocheted Star Afghan Instructions
We can readily make crocheted items into round, oval, square and rectangular shapes. There are patterns for ripples and waves as well but you can translate the ripples and waves into a multi-sided shape to make stars with any number of points. You will need to learn a few crochet stitches if you do not know them already. The chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet are not hard. Just practice a bit before you begin your project.

1
Start with a chain. Form the end of the yarn into a loop. The end of the yarn is called the tail. Take the other end, the active end, and push it around the loop and through.
-
2
Place that part you pushed through on the crochet hook. Pull the yarn to snug it up around the hook. Grab another section of your active yarn and pull it through the loop. This is your second chain. Continue this for as many chain stitches as you need.
-
-
3
Make a single crochet by inserting the hook through a previously made stitch, pick up a loop of yarn, and pull it through the loop on the hook and the stitch.
-
4
Make a double crochet by wrapping the yarn around the hook first, put the hook through a stitch, pull up a loop. Now grab a new loop and pull it through two of the four loops on the hook. Pull another new loop through the last two loops.
-
5
Chain six and slip-stitch through the first chain to form a loop.
-
6
Chain three and then double crochet through the loop three times the number of points you want on your star. The chain three counts as the first double crochet. For a five-point star crochet 15 double crochets and for a six-point star make 18 and so on.
-
7
Slip stitch into the third stitch of your chain three. Start next round.
-
8
Single crochet in first stitch. Double crochet three times in next stitch. Chain one and then double crochet three times again in same stitch. This set of six double crochets and a chain is called a cluster. Make a single crochet, then single crochet again.
-
9
Make another three double crochet chain two, three double crochet cluster. Single crochet two stitches and repeat clusters and two single crochet until round is complete. Last stitch on this round will be a single crochet next to your first single crochet in this round.
-
10
Skip single crochet from previous round and double crochet in first double crochet from previous round. Make double crochet in next double crochet, and then third double crochet in next double crochet. Where your chain stitch is from the previous round, make a 3-1-3 cluster. Make three double crochets, one in each of the next three stitches.
-
11
Continue around the star in this manner until the last double crochet is stitched into the last double crochet from the previous round. Place a piece of yarn loosely in the last stitch to mark end of round.
-
12
Skip next two stitches. Make double crochet in third stitch. Make a total of five double crochet stitches along side of first point of star. Make cluster in first chain stitch from previous row. Make five double crochet stitches down opposite side of first point.
-
13
Skip two stitches and continue pattern of five double crochets, a cluster and five double crochets until you reach the marker at the end of this round. Count stitches carefully on either side of the cluster. The number of stitches must match on both sides of each point or the points will become skewed.
-
14
Skip two stitches and then double crochet in third stitch. Stitch six double crochets and then make cluster in chain from previous row. Stitch six double crochets and then skip two stitches.
-
15
Continue around increasing to seven double crochets between clusters the next round, then eight, and so on until the star afghan is the size you want. Tie off yarn and weave ends in.

Tips & Warnings
One of the keys to crochet will be learning to keep the tension even by wrapping the active yarn around one or two fingers and letting it go as needed. This aspect of crochet will take practice.
Additional patterns are attached, one with a video tutorial for more specific information. Note that these directions are not the same as any of the attached patterns.
