How to Trim a Siberian Husky

How to Trim a Siberian Husky thumbnail
The Siberian husky needs minimal trimming to look and feel great.

The Siberian husky is a very loving, gentle and playful family dog. The Siberian has a thick double coat of fur, a cottony undercoat along with a vibrant and protective outer coat. Colors can vary from patterns of white, black, silver, red and sable. Twice a year new undercoat grows in, resulting in heavy shedding of your dog. Regular grooming and minor trimming keeps your Siberian husky in healthy condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your dog on a table or other surface so you have easy access to him. If you have a squirmy dog, you may need the help of an assistant or you can purchase a portable grooming arm that attaches to most tables. This device helps to keep your dog safely in place during the grooming process.

    • 2

Brush your dog's coat backwards against the growth of the fur using the dog coat-rake. Start brushing from the neck area and work your way to the base of the tail.

    • 3

Hold your scissors over the top of your dog's coat and lightly trim any of the unruly hairs that are sticking up. Begin at the base of the skull and skim the body with your scissors down to the base of the tail.

    • 4

Comb down the sides of the body and trim an even line on both sides and under the belly area of your dog.

    • 5

Use a small slicker brush and back-brush the fur on top of the foot. With a small curved scissor, trim any of the fur that remains standing up. Lift the foot, back-brush and trim the visible fur on the pads.

    • 6

Hold the tail by its tip and back-brush. Hold the scissors over the tail as you clip the unruly hairs that stick out on the top, sides and bottom for a light trim. A Siberian's tail should be uniform in length all around and appear spherical when completely trimmed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Very minimal trimming on the body of your Siberian husky is needed.

  • Go over your dog very lightly when skimming with the scissors. If you use any amount of pressure, you will cut holes in the fur.

  • If the dog is uncooperative, it may not be the best time to for a trim.

  • Never shave this breed of dog.
