Use GIMP edge detect to add a neon effect to your photos.

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a freeware application that can be used for photo editing or creating graphics entirely from scratch. There are occasions when you might combine these two functions. For example, you may want to create a wild, artsy-looking image based on a photo you have taken. One way to do this is to add a neon-glow effect. Doing this in GIMP simplifies the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the photo you want to work with onto your computer.

    • 2

Start the GIMP application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog box, browse to and open the photo you loaded.

    • 3

Select "Filter" from the menu and choose "Edge Detect." From the options, choose "Neon."

    • 4

Adjust the "Radius" and "Amount" in the dialog box that opens until you are satisfied with the preview. Click "OK" to apply the effect. Save your work.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use other edge detect filters to create additional effects. For example, the Gaussian edge detect can be used to convert photos to sketches.
