Do you want your Hawaiian vacation to be as authentic as possible? Getting a lei as you step off the airplane on your island of choice is the traditional way to welcome you to Hawaii, but everyone who arrives in Hawaii doesn't receive a lei at the airport. Getting a lei greeting requires preparation prior to your departure.

Write down or print out your travel arrangements so you can easily refer to them when you order your lei greeting. Be sure you have the airline, flight number, arrival time and arrival destination during your consultation.

Conduct an Internet search to find a greeting company that serves your needs. There are many authentic, credible companies to choose from that will deliver leis to you upon your arrival in Hawaii. One of these companies is Lei Greeting, which serves four Hawaiian islands.

Book your reservation online or by telephone. There are a variety of leis available, ranging in price from $20 to $35; special honeymoon leis are also available for around $68. You can order a standard lei, or choose a custom one with specific types of flowers, based on availability. Provide all your travel information so the greeter will be able to easily find you upon your arrival. Keep in mind that the earlier you book, the better, and reservations are typically accepted no later than 48 hours before your arrival. In addition to giving you a lei, the greeter can help you find your way through the airport and offer travel advice.

Print or write down your confirmation number and receipt after ordering. Keep this information with you in your travel documents so you can refer to it, if necessary.

Meet your greeter after you exit the secure arrivals area of the airport. The greeter will have a sign with your name on it and will present you with your leis after you introduce yourself and prove your identity. Greeters wear either a red or blue shirt with the company name on it, making them easy to spot in the crowd.

Tips & Warnings

  • Preserve your lei by spritzing it with water and storing it in the refrigerator.
