While plenty of guys have dressed up as their favorite green heroes, girls too can create their own Ninja Turtle costumes by beginning with an inexpensive plain green dress and using a few craft and home supplies to create the turtle details. This idea is perfect for group costumes, to be worn with three other friends. Decide which turtle you'll be, and find additional fabric in that turtle's signature color to add to the costume.
Things You'll Need
- Green dress
- 1 yard yellow fabric
- Fabric scissors
- Hot glue
- Glue gun
- Brown permanent marker
- Lightweight round trash can lid
- Green spray paint
- 3-inch-wide colored ribbon
- 1/2 yard tan fabric
Using the fabric scissors, cut the yellow fabric into a rectangle to fit as a breast plate across the chest of the costume. Round two edges into the top and bottom sections, and three edges into the left and right sides of the rectangle to resemble the Ninja Turtle's six pack of muscles.
Using the glue gun, add glue to the edges of the breast plate fabric and add it to the chest and abdomen area on the plain green dress. Let dry completely.
Using the brown permanent marker, draw a vertical line down the middle of the yellow six pack fabric. Draw two horizontal lines across the six pack fabric, in between each rounded edge, creating the look of the muscles and underbelly of the turtle.
Using the spray paint, spray the inside and outside of the trash can lid green. Let dry completely.
Using the brown permanent marker, draw the plates of the turtle shell onto the trashcan lid. Edges of the plates should connect and resemble pentagon shapes.
Use the fabric scissors to cut two straps for the turtle shell. Straps should be about 1 1/2 feet long by 2 inches wide, enough to create straps for wearing the lid like a backpack.
Use the glue gun to hot glue the bottom and top of each strap. Apply the strap to the inside top and bottom of trashcan lid, shoulder width apart. Let dry completely.
Wrap the colored ribbon around your head to designate length and add 6 inches to each end, creating tails to tie the mask with. Using the fabric scissors, cut the designated length of 3-inch-wide colored ribbon. Fold the fabric in half and cut two half circles about an inch apart for the eye holes.
Using the fabric scissors, cut four 4 inch strips of the tan fabric. These are to be wrapped and tied onto elbows and knee caps.
The remainder of the tan fabric will be used for the turtle belt. Use the brown permanent marker to draw a circle in the middle of the tan fabric. Write the first letter of the turtle's costume you have created in the center of the circle and tie at the waist.
Tips & Warnings
- Add plastic weapons to your costume according to your Ninja Turtle. Leonardo, the blue turtle, carries katanas; Donatello (purple) uses a Bo staff; Raphael (red) carries sais and Michelangelo (orange) has nunchaucks.
