How to Empty Trash Posts in WordPress

The Posts screen in WordPress has an area called the "Trash" that functions much like the Windows Recycle Bin. When you delete a post by sending it to the trash, It is no longer displayed on the post list or shown to readers. However, it remains in the WordPress database, increasing its size. If you are certain that you do not need to restore the posts that you have sent to the trash, empty the trash to remove the deleted post content from the WordPress database.

      Click the "Posts" heading in the left column of the WordPress dashboard page. This displays your website's list of published and draft posts.

      Click the blue "Trash" link above the post list. This displays the list of posts that you have sent to the Trash.

      Click the "Empty Trash" button above the list of posts. This deletes all the items in the Trash immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove a post from the Trash without deleting it, hover the mouse pointer over the post name, and click "Restore."

  • To delete a single post from the Trash without emptying all posts, hover the mouse pointer over the post name, and click "Delete Permanently."
