How to Sprout Dracaena Draco Seeds

"Dracaena draco" is the botanical name for what is more commonly called the dragon tree or the dragon blood tree. It is a native of the canary islands and looks similar to a palm tree with spiky green fronds at the top of a single tall trunk. Because Dracaena draco is a slow grower, it is commonly planted in pots when young. If desired, you can propagate Dracaena draco directly from seed as long as it's kept constantly moist. Instructions

    • 1

Open a clear, plastic storage bag and fill it with 1 to 2 cups of peat moss. Add enough water to the moss that it is barely damp. When you squeeze the peat moss in your hand only one or two drops of water should come out.

    • 2

Insert the Dracaena draco seeds into the bag and seal the bag up tightly. Rub the bag gently between your fingers to mix the seed thoroughly into the peat moss.

    • 3

Place the bag in an indoor area that is out of direct sunlight and that maintains a temperature of between 65 and 85 degrees F. Leave the bag in this location for at least one month, at which point the seeds will germinate and produce tiny green sprouts.

Tips & Warnings

  • After sprouting, open the bag and transplant each seed sprout into a separate 5-inch diameter plant pot filled with a 50-50 mixture of sterile potting soil and peat. Place the pots in a partially sunny outdoor location or a sunny indoor window.

  • Dracaena draco can be planted outdoors in United States Department of Agriculture growing zones 9 through 11.
