How to See if Your Site Is in Google

Creating a new website or blog usually takes a considerable amount of time and effort, even with help from site-creation wizards and online website content-management systems. If you've poured hours into launching a new website, you'll want to know if it's been indexed by Google and other major search engines. You can check if Google has indexed your website for inclusion in its search results by searching Google with a specific command.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your browser and navigate to google.com.

    • 2

Enter the URL address for your website into the Google search box, and append it after the "site" search command. For example, if you want to check that a website called "www.example.com" has been indexed, enter "site:www.example.com" into the search box. You don't need to enter the "http://" portion of the URL. Do not insert a space between the colon and the first letter of the Web address.

    • 3

Press "Return" or "Enter." If Google has indexed your site, it will display pages from your site in the search results.

    • 4

Enter the URL for your website into the Google search box, but this time without the "www" part of the address. For example, enter "site:example.com" into the search box. Again, do not insert a space between the colon and the first letter of the Web address. You need to do this because Google sometimes indexes sites without the "www" element of the address.

    • 5

Press "Return" or "Enter." If Google has indexed your site, it will display pages from your site in the search results.

Tips & Warnings

  • Google crawls and indexes millions of Web pages every week. It can take days or weeks for new websites to feature in Google search results.

  • Make sure that Google knows about your website or blog. You can submit a URL to Google by navigating to google.com/addurl and typing the Web address and details of your site into the relevant input fields.
