How to Thread a Singer 14SH654 Overlock Machine

The Singer 14SH654 Finishing Touch overlock machine was designed as a basic, electronic serger for home use. Threading the machine will require four spools of thread, one for each color channel as indicated. The color channels are orange, yellow, green and blue and all are threaded in order from right to left. Each channel is well marked and indicated by the colors and letters necessary to ensure proper threading. A picture of the thread patterns is inside of the door that opens on the front of the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by threading the upper guides. First slip the thread under the guide which is located on the top of the back of the machine. The thread slips under the bracket from right to left.

    • 2

Thread the upper looper which is indicated by the orange thread tension dial. The tension dial is the wheel located on the front side of the machine with numbers to indicate how much tension is being placed on the individual thread. Place the thread behind the first guide, which is directly below the tension dial, in a right-to-left pattern.

    • 3

Continue threading the upper looper by inserting the thread in a right-to-left pattern in the four remaining guides indicated by the orange dots.

    • 4

Thread the eye last, inserting the thread through the front of the eye and pulling 8 inches of thread out of the back side of the eye.

    • 5

Thread the yellow lower looper second and continue through the four thread guides indicated by yellow dots. Use tweezers to assist in threading the guides as needed. Thread the eye from front to back last, pulling 8 inches of thread over the orange upper looper and towards the back of the machine.

    • 6

Place the thread under the green right needle guide located directly below the green tension dial. Run the thread over the green dot on the assembly to the left of the guide. Insert the thread through wire guide "A" located at the top of the right needle then through the front of the needle. Pull 8 inches of thread under the overpass on the right foot then to the back of the machine.

    • 7

Thread the blue left needle by first placing the thread through the guide directly under the blue tension dial. Run the thread through the bottom of the assembly to the left and thread through wire guide "B," which is at the top of the left needle. Insert the thread through the front of the needle then under the overpass on the right foot and pull 8 inches of thread out of the back of the machine.

Adjust the tension wheels and stitch width as needed for the specific serger project you are working on.
