How to Appear Permanently Offline on Facebook
The Facebook chat feature is an efficient way to stay in touch with friends. It displays all available users and allows you to exchange personal messages instantly. Although the chat function is a welcome addition, it may also present unwanted interruptions. As long as you are signed in to Facebook, the chat window discloses your online status, thus allowing others to contact you. Fortunately, you can opt to remain offline and only sign in whenever you wish to chat.

Sign in to your existing Facebook profile.

Click to launch the "Chat" window located in the lower-right portion of the screen.

Click "Options" followed by "Go Offline" to effectively sign out of the chat program.

To log back in, simply click the chat window to automatically display your online status once again.
