1
Unplug the printer from its power source. Wait for about 30 to 45 second to plug it back in and turn it on. This will restart the printer and fix standby error messages.
-
2
Examine the USB connection. The MFC-420CN, as most Brother printers, connects to your computer via a USB cable provided with the printer. Ensure that the USB cable properly connects to an open USB port on the side or back of your computer. A loose USB connection can generate error messages while printing, scanning or faxing documents.

3
Resend the document you are trying to fax to fix the "COMM.ERROR" message. If you still receive the error message, either you don't have the MFC-420CN connected properly to the telephone line or you have a bad telephone line. Unplug all other equipment you have connected to the telephone line, including your modem, telephone handsets, answering machines, switching devices and adapters. Examine the telephone line to ensure that you have it connected correctly from the "Line" jack on the MFC-420CN to the telephone wall jack.

4
Remove the "Jam Clear Cover" from the read of the printer to fix paper jams when you receive the "No Paper Fed" error. Locate the traces of printing paper stuck in the printer rollers. Pull out the jammed paper sheets gently, without touching the print feeding rollers.
-
5
Install replacement ink cartridges to fix the "Machine Error 46" message or poor quality printing. Follow the instructions provided in the packaging or in the user's guide to install the replacement ink cartridges.

Press the "Menu" button if you receive the "Out of Memory" error while scanning or faxing a document. Press the arrow buttons to select the "Fax" option and press "OK." Press the arrow buttons to select either "Print Fax" or "Print Document" and press "OK." Press the "Black(Mono) Start" button to reattempt the scan or fax. Press "Stop/Exit" when the task completes.
