How to Tie a Little Boy's Tie on a Tie Clip
Putting a tie on a little boy can be a challenge. Children are not always comfortable wearing ties, and the child may not have the patience to sit still as you tie it. Practicing the art of tying a tie on someone else can help you progress through the task quickly and with minimal trouble from the child. Adding a tie clip to the ensemble will help to keep the tie in position and prevent it from looking disheveled as the child plays throughout the day.

1
Dress the boy in a button-up shirt, buttoned to the top button or at least the second-highest button.
-
2
Drape the tie around the child's neck so the thicker end falls over his left shoulder and hits just above his waist.
-
-
3
Pull the thicker end so it crosses in front of the thinner end; then tuck it around behind the thinner end and pull it out to your right (his left).
-
4
Cross it back over the thin end, pulling it to your left (his right), creating a loop.
-
5
Pull the wide end through the loop towards his chin to create a knot. Tuck the wide end back down through the loop and pull gently to create the knot. For a small boy, it is best to keep the knot fairly loose so he does not feel constricted.
-
6
Insert the tie clip by sliding it in on his right side (your left), clipping the top bar over the front of the tie and the back bar of the clip into the gap between the buttons of the shirt so the tie is clipped down to the shirt.

Tips & Warnings
If the child cannot sit still long enough for you to tie the knot, create the tie's knot without the child wearing it, measuring the length of the wide part of the tie up against the shirt he will be wearing. Create the tie up to the beginning part of step 5, when the wide part of the tie is pulled up through the loop and then back down; however, refrain from pulling the tie tight until you slip the loop over his head when it is time to go. Continue on with the rest of step 5 and then step 6.
