How to Make My Own Mr. Potato Head
Hasbro introduced the sweet and playful Mr. Potato Head, invented by George Lerner, in 1952. At that time the toy only included the different parts, and children used a real potato as the head. It wasn't until 1964 that a hard-plastic potato was sold along with the parts. Since then the lovable spud has gained a spouse, Mrs. Potato Head, and gone through several changes, including size. Fashion your own plush potato head at home if your child prefers a soft toy over a hard-plastic one.

1
Draw the shape of Mr. Potato Head on a sheet of tan felt with tailor's chalk; draw it large enough to take up most of the sheet. The shape should resemble a circle with a lump on the top. Place the sheet of tan felt on a second sheet of tan felt. Cut the shape out through both sheets.

2
Sew the two Mr. Potato Head-shaped pieces of felt together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance leaving a 3-inch opening along the bottom. Stuff the potato head with just enough fiber fill to give it a slightly rounded shape. Sew the opening along the bottom closed.

3
Cut different mouths, noses, eyes, ears, hair, facial hair and accessories --- such as purses, earrings and shoes --- from different colors of felt on the same scale as your potato head. Attach the rough portion of self-adhesive fastener tape circles to the back sides of the accessories so they will stick to the potato head.
