How to Put Designs Into Wood Carvings
Wood carvings are excellent decorations for inside or outside the home. Inside the home, you could design ornamental knickknacks, make one-of-a-kind furniture pieces or create special moldings for your windows and staircases. Outside the home, you could enhance the look of unsightly tree stumps, make yard figures or design customize benches and swings. The possibilities are endless and you are limited only by your own level of creativity. You can put designs in your wood carvings using several different methods.

1
Chisel a piece of wood into the shape with which you would like to work. For larger pieces of wood, it is best to use a chisel and hammer. For smaller pieces and for more detailed work, try using a small knife instead.
-
2
Stain the wood if you would like to alter its natural color. Wood stain can be purchased at any home improvement store. Brush on the stain with a paint brush and allow it to dry overnight. Additional coats can be added if desired.

3
Use a woodburning pen to burn designs right into the wood. To use a woodburning pen, plug it in, let it heat up, then press the tip of the pen against the wood for a few seconds to burn it. You can use stencils for designs, or you can freestyle on your own.
-
4
Paint designs and patterns onto your wood carving. You could paint an entire scenic picture, paint random patterns, or just use the different colors of paint to accent the different things you've done thus far to the carving.
-
5
Glue on different decorations, such as gemstones, metals or anything else that fits with your theme. You can use regular wood glue, or a hot glue gun for this.
