How to Dry Roast Edamame

Edamame are immature soybeans that have been harvested before they ripen. The soybeans appear green in color and often are boiled, steamed or roasted. Dry roasting soybeans involves applying heat to them without oil. Roasting the green soybeans gives them a crunchy texture. You also can season the roasted edamame if desired. Edamame are high in protein and have a chewy and nut-like flavor when roasted. Serve roasted edamame as a snack or as a side dish with dinner.

    Things You'll Need

    • Heavy-bottom cast iron skillet
    • 1 lb. frozen edamame
    • Tongs
    • Bowl
    • Salt

        Place a heavy-bottom cast iron skillet on the stovetop over high heat.

        Place 1/2 lb. of frozen edamame into the skillet.

        Turn the edamame over with tongs frequently.

        Roast the edamame in the skillet until it blackens in many spots. The edamame may take up to eight minutes to finish dry roasting. Turn the edamame frequently to prevent burning it.

        Remove the edamame from the heat source. Pour it into a bowl and season it with salt if you desire.

        Cook the other 1/2 lb. of edamame in the skillet.

        Serve the dry roasted edamame immediately. Remove the edamame from the pods with your fingers.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Dry roast fresh edamame by boiling it in a pot of salted water for two minutes. Drain the water and allow the edamame to cool completely before dry roasting it.

    • Sprinkle the desired seasonings over the edamame. Seasonings may include chili powder, onion powder, salt or pepper.

    • Roast edamame in the oven by coating it lightly with oil and baking it a heated 375 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Stir the edamame while it roasts until it browns evenly.

    • Avoid overcooking the edamame because they will burn easily.
