1
Find the profit margin on the cans. Contact local recycling centers to find the best price per pound. Take into consideration the location of the center as travel costs will factor into your bottom line.
-
2
Identify the areas where discarded cans are most abundant. Parks and other areas where parties are held or people socialize are starting spots. This identification will save time on your search.

-
3
Contact local businesses about collecting their aluminum cans. Stores, restaurants and taverns might allow pickups.
-
4
Empty the cans. Rinse if a foul odor is present.
-
5
Collect the cans in a portable container with a lid. Don't take daily collections to the recycle center; keep the cans in easy-to-move containers until you have a profitable amount. Keep a lid on the containers to prevent possible foul smells from escaping.
-
6
Crush the cans before turning them in. Not all recycling companies require this, but it saves you space for transporting the cans.

Tips & Warnings
Large rubber or plastic trash cans with lids allow for the cans to be transported and can be easily washed out after recycling.
Get permission to pick up aluminum cans on private property. Some businesses and private individuals do not allow access to their refuse.
Be sure the cans are aluminum. If there is a doubt, use a magnet to check. A magnet will not stick to aluminum.
