How to Tie a Sunfish Knot

How to Tie a Sunfish Knot thumbnail
Some boaters complete multiple passes of the cleat knot before finishing.

A sunfish boat is a small sail-powered watercraft that can only hold one to three riders at a given time. In order to operate your boat safely on the water, and dock it in a manner to protect your boat and any boats around it, there are a variety of knots you must know. Three basic knots used during the rigging of a sunfish boat are the cleat knot, the figure eight knot and the square knot.

Instructions

  1. Cleat

    • 1

Wrap the rope around the base of the cleat two times.

    • 2

Wrap the end of the rope over the center of the top of the cleat, then around one spike.

    • 3

Pass the end back over the center of the top of the cleat, then around the other spike.

    • 4

Repeat the wrap around the spikes multiple times, if desired. More wraps can make the knot more secure; however, if you only have enough line left for one wrap it will still be a snug knot.

    • 5

Pass the loose end of rope under the section of rope just before the last section wrapped around a spike.

    Figure Eight

    • 6

Pass the loose end of rope behind the main line of rope.

    • 7

Pass the loose end of rope over the main line of rope, creating a second loop in the rope.

    • 8

Pass the loose end under the near side of the first loop created.

    • 9

Pass the loose end over the far side of the first loop, passing the rope through the loop, and pull on the end to tighten the knot.

    Square Knot

    • 10

Bend the rope to make an open loop in the rope, then press the side of the bend against the item being tied off on.

    • 11

Pass an end of the rope around the item being tied off on.

    • 12

Pass the loose end through the bend in the rope.

    • 13

Wrap the end over the section of rope in the bend touching the item being tied off on, then around both sides of the bend in the rope, and back through the bend. This creates a second bend in the rope, with the loose ends of each bend passing through the other bend. Pull to tighten.
