How to Remove & Disable the Sidebar in Windows Vista

The Windows Vista sidebar holds widgets or gadgets to enhance your computer using experience. Vista comes pre-packaged with certain widgets you can use. You can also download third party widgets from the Microsoft website. The drawback to using the sidebar is that it takes up a large part of your Vista screen. You can easily close the sidebar for a single computing instance, or you can permanently disable the sidebar until you want to use it again.

  1. Close The Sidebar

      Turn on your computer running Windows Vista.

      Right-click a blank spot on the sidebar.

      Choose "Close Sidebar" from the list of options.

    Disable The Sidebar

      Open the "Start" menu.

      Type the word "Sidebar" into the "Search" box. Click the link to open "Windows Sidebar Properties."

      Remove the checkmark from "Start Sidebar when Windows starts."

      Press the "Apply" button. Press the "OK" button.
