Why is Firefox 3.5.8 Slow & Jerky?

Nobody likes a slow Web browser. If Firefox isn't performing as speedily as it used to, any of a number of different issues could be causing the problem. You may even find that it is necessary to perform several different fixes to get things working optimally again. Any of these fixes can be performed by even the most beginner Firefox users. Before you begin, you will want to save any open emails or documents that you may be working on within your browser, as some of these steps may require you to restart your browser.

Close any excess tabs, particularly if you are running several bandwidth-heavy sites at one time. While Firefox can handle having many tabs open at once, some sites are more work to keep running. Streaming audio or video, auto-refreshing sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and browser-based games all do better if you let them run with a minimum of interference.

Check your Firefox add-ons for updates. Out-of-date add-ons can often cause stability issues with your browser. Some third-party add-ons may cause problems even if they are up-to-date. If you are unsure of which add-on is to blame for Firefox's poor performance, disable all of them and re-enable them, one at a time.

Try to visit websites in another Internet browser. If the sites are loading fine without any speed issues, then something about your installation of Firefox is to blame. If the other browser is having trouble as well, then your Internet connection is likely at fault, in which case you should reset your browser.

Shut down Firefox and run a virus scan on your computer. Browser hijackers and other unwanted programs can interfere with the performance of your browser and your computer as a whole. If malware is detected on your system, follow your anti-virus software's directions for quarantine and removal.

Upgrade to the latest version of Firefox. Unless there is a specific reason why you wish to stay with version 3.5.8, upgrading to the most recent release often cures stability and speed issues. Compatibility issues with add-ons also can be cleared up with a simple upgrade. Visit the official Firefox website to upgrade your software, or use the Update tool within Firefox's "Help" menu.
