How to Play a Team Member Role

How to Play a Team Member Role thumbnail
A successful team requires strong input from all its members.

Often in business project teams are formed to work together towards a particular objective. When this happens, it is very important that every team member works hard and pulls his or her own weight. If you should find yourself on such a team, you will likely be required to complete tasks to a high standard and by a certain deadline. By following a few key steps, you can become an effective team member on any project.

Instructions

    • 1

Be consistent. If you say you are going to carry out a task, follow through to the best of your ability. Also be sure to meet the established project deadlines. Doing these things will foster trust in your peers and may lead to greater responsibilities as time progresses.

    • 2

Voice your opinions or suggestions without fear. A good team is based on strong communication. This includes listening to the proposals of others and giving them due respect and consideration. Be careful not to use aggressive words or body language when conveying a point.

    • 3

Solve problems by working with your teammates to find a solution which is effective and efficient. In certain cases, you may be required to take the lead in a problem solving initiative, particularly if you've been assigned to head a small sub-group that has been given the task of resolving a specific issue. Weigh the pros and cons of each side of the issue before making your choice, and remember to have confidence in your ultimate decision.

    • 4

Be flexible and do not complain. Quite often the focus of a group is shifted with the alteration of an objective. Or the change may be something as minor as your manager rescheduling a meeting at the last minute. Whatever the case may be, avoid the urge to whine and instead adapt to the situation in order to be as productive as possible.
