Making homemade apple juice is simple, whether you want it to be filtered or unfiltered. Unfiltered apple juice is thick, slightly slimy and the consistency of a smoothie. Some people prefer this thicker consistency and choose to make homemade juice, as unfiltered is not commonly sold in food stores. Use any apples you wish to make the juice, however, Juice Benefits recommend Macintosh, Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji and Rome apples. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Apples
  • Apple corer
  • Colander
  • Bowl/pan
  • Flat spoon
  • Glass

Instructions

      Thoroughly wash the apples and chop them into segments. It will be a lot easier and quicker if you have an apple corer -- nevertheless, this can still be done by hand -- it will just take longer. Do not peel the apples; you will lose all the goodness.

      Tip the diced apples into a large pan of boiling water. Ensure the water fully covers the apples. Put the lid on the pan and simmer, until the apples are soft.

      Tip the soft, boiled apples into a colander, resting over a large bowl or pan. A colander has larger holes than a sieve and will allow all the fruit through, leaving behind only the peel. If there is slightly bigger pieces of apple left, get a flat spoon and squash the remaining apple through the holes in the colander. You should be left with the thick juice in the bowl or pan.

      Allow the juice to cool in the fridge. You should not need to add any sugar or sweeteners. However, you can add cinnamon if you wish, to give your juice a different taste.

      Serve in a glass with ice. If the juice is too thick, you can always pulse the juice in a food processor.
