How to Trace Edges for a Template
Almost any object can be used as a template for a stencil, drawing or art project. Mugs are perfect for creating circles, and boxes are great for straight lines or squares. If you have an object with a more organic shape, like a starfish, shoe or hairbrush, these can also be traced to make interesting shapes.

1
Place the object you want to trace onto the center of your paper. Leave enough room around the object so no lines run off the edge of the paper.
-
2
Press firmly on the object with one hand so it doesn't move while you are tracing it.
-
-
3
Use your free hand and a pencil to trace the edges where your object meets the paper. Use slow and steady pressure to ensure the entire object is traced and the lines are easily visible when you remove it.
-
4
Remove the object and check that all lines are clearly visible. Transfer this outline to your template plastic with graphite transfer paper. Place the transfer paper over the plastic and lay the paper outline over it. Redraw over all of the lines you made. Lift both papers and you'll see the image has been transferred to the plastic.
