An image map allows links to be placed on top of an image on your website.

The Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. Whether we are seeking information, news, social interaction or entertainment, the Internet can provide something for everyone. Creating a website of your own is a great way to promote your ideas, business or hobbies. Instead of creating a run of the mill website that will get lost in the mix, using an image map to create a nice, custom website can set you apart from the competition and give you the exposure and look you are searching for.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your image. Click "Insert" in the menu bar, then click "Image." Select the image you created for your website.

    • 2

Click the rectangle, circle or polygon hotspot tool icon below "Map" in the "Properties" toolbar depending on what shape you want the image map link to be.

    • 3

Place the cursor over the top-left corner of where you want the link on your image. Click and drag down and right to create the map.

    • 4

Type the URL you want the link to direct to in the "Link" box in the "Properties" window. Select a target in the drop-down menu below.

    • 5

Click the arrow icon under "Map" in the Properties window. This allows you to move, resize and edit your various image maps. When you have created all the image maps you need, save the website and preview it. Your image maps created in Dreamweaver should now direct users to the correct location.
