How to Clean Hardened Grease Off a Moonroof
A moonroof is what many people think of when they hear the term sunroof. A moonroof is a sliding glass plate in the top of a vehicle that may or may not be able to open. If the moonroof can open, automotive grease is typically used to lubricate the roof and help it open and close with ease. Over the years, and if the wrong kind of grease is used, the grease can harden. Hardened grease prevents the moonroof from opening and closing properly. You can fix this problem with a few automotive supplies.
Things You'll Need
- Putty knife
- Soft cloths
- Large tray (as large as the moonroof)
- Carburetor cleaner
- Slide grease

1
Open the moonroof as far as possible. If the grease is really hard, it may not open at all or only a little bit.
-
2
Knock off as much of the grease as you can see with a putty knife. The grease should come off in chunks. Place a pan below the moonroof to catch the chunks of grease.

-
3
Spray some carburetor cleaner into the cavities of the moonroof. Allow the cleaner to sit for about 10 minutes. Try to open the moonroof further, to loosen up the grease.
-
4
Wipe the moonroof down with a soft cloth to remove any additional grease residue from the area.
-
5
Repeat the opening, scraping and spraying process until the moonroof can open all the way.
-
6
Wipe the moonroof down with a soft cloth once more. Replace the grease with slide grease designed for use on automotive parts and moonroofs. This will prevent the grease from hardening in the future and will enable everyday use of the roof.
