How to Parallel Park in a Parking Lot
Parallel parking can be stressful for new drivers. It may take more than one try for anyone to perfectly execute. Even those with more driving experience have trouble parallel parking. Although, it may may be easier to simply pull into a parking spot, there will be times where parallel parking is the only option. When faced with parallel parking in a parking lot, being calm and mindful of the surrounding cars and pedestrians can make it less of an ordeal.

1
Signal for your spot. Using your turn signal will alert other drivers that you are planning to park. The drivers will know to safely move around you, providing space to maneuver.
-
2
Stop next to the car in front of the spot in which you wish to park. Do not attempt to cram your car into a small spot. Try to leave at least 2 feet between the cars in front of and behind you. Try to line up the back bumper of your car with the one parked in front of the space.
-
-
3
Put your car in reverse. Check the side and rear view mirrors for any cars or pedestrians that may be behind or to the side of you. Wait for them to move out of the path of your car before proceeding.
-
4
Turn to look at the space you will park in. Turn the wheel hard to the right. Let your foot off of the break and slowly let the car turn back into the space. Stop occasionally to check you avoid hitting pedestrians and other cars.
-
5
Continue allowing the car to enter the space. Be careful not to hit the back bumper of the car in front of the spot, or the curb. If the parking space is not near a curb, keep your eyes on the space's line through the side mirrors. Use other spacial markers such as other cars to ensure that you fit into the spot correctly. Put the car in drive and return to the starting position next to the car if you fear you may hit the bumper.
-
6
Stop and turn the wheel to the left when your car is about 2 or 3 inches from the curb, or most of the rear side of the vehicle has made it into the space. This will help the car to straighten in the parking spot. Release the break and slowly allow the rest of the car to enter the space.
-
7
Stop the car once it is completely in the space. Be careful not to hit the car behind you. Now, it is time to straighten out the car and center it in the space. Turn the wheel right until the tires are positioned straight. Place the car in drive.
-
8
Drive forward until the car is positioned in the center of the space. Line up your car with the one in front of it to ensure that you are centered in the spot. You may have to reverse the car and turn the wheel to the left or right, to get it in line with the other car. However, once you are done parking, straighten out the wheel.
-
9
Place the car in park once you are centered in the spot.
