How to Break Tackles

Use proper body position to help break tackles.

The primary objective of a football team is to move the ball down the field and across the opponent's goal line to score. Stopping the opposing team from doing the same is also an objective. Tackles are used to stop players in possession of the ball from advancing. A player in possession of the ball uses various techniques to help break a tackle and continue to gain yardage.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the ball with two hands when you're about to be tackled. Place the ball in the center of your body and just under the front of your shoulder pads. Cover the upper and lower sides of the ball with both forearms. Keep the ball pressed tightly against your body.

    • 2

Maintain control of your body. Keep your shoulders over your feet and your feet shoulder-width apart for good balance.

    • 3

Sink your hips when the opponent makes contact. Lean forward and continue to move your feet. Never stop your feet when you're hit, as this immediately ceases your forward momentum.

    • 4

Raise your knees high as you continue to run forward through the tackle. Use the strength of your legs and knees to break through arm tackles and punish the body of the tackler as he attempts to wrap you up.

    • 5

Shed a tackler by pushing him away with your forearm or hand. Push the shoulder, body or head of the player, but keep your hands away from the face mask at all times to avoid a potential penalty. Stay low and continue running through the tackler.

Tips & Warnings

  • Coaches can use drills to teach tackle-breaking technique. Teach players to drive their knees high, for example, by placing bags in a runner's path. Add players to the side of the bags and have them slap, grab and attempt to strip the ball so that your runners can practice ball security.
